Medical Oncology

Medical oncology involves the diagnosing and treating of cancer systemically by using chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, biological therapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy. Medical oncologists often practice hematology as well, which is a specialty involving disorders of the blood. Therefore, not everyone treated in medical oncology has cancer.

Radiation Oncology

Radiation oncology is a specialty which uses radiation therapy via high energy beams to kill cancer cells. Your radiation oncologist is a specialist in this field. Most radiation treatments treat the local area of cancer involvement rather than the whole body.
