Birthing Center Education

The Birthing Center Education Office at Watauga Medical Center offers a wide range of classes and programs to meet the educational needs of expecting parents before, during and after the arrival of your new baby. *Classes start at 6:30 unless otherwise noted*

Programs Offered:

Registration is required (828) 262-4285.

  • Basic Pediatric Life Support: Basic training in infant (birth-1 yr) and child (1-8yr) cardiopulmonary resuscitation, choking and rescue breathing. FREE

  • Breastfeeding: This is a one night class on feeding preparation and techniques for the breastfed baby. Topics include basic breastfeeding and options for when a mom is separated from her baby (including pumping and formula feeding). Must register. FREE

  • Childbirth and Newborn Parenting Classes: Topics include what to expect during labor and delivery, the hospital experience and pain control strategies for labor. Class includes a tour of the Birthing Center. Course is recommended for all births including cesarean sections and those planning to use an epidural. Registration recommended by 20 weeks. There are two classes offered: Wednesday and Thursday nights. Class also covers a number of topics relating to parenting newborns. (Medicaid Accepted and Scholarships Available) FEE $90.00

Other Community Offerings:

Make it & Take it: Hands on, take home educational activity for parents and preschool children to promote positive interaction. Every third Monday from 9:30-10:30 am. FREE Call Robin at Cove Creek School at 297-2781 ext. 407
