Joseph Helak, MD, FACC, obtained his medical degree from State University of New York at Upstate Medical Center, where he also completed his residency. He completed his fellowship in cardiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Helak is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease and the National Board of Echocardiography.
In 1987, he performed New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s first cardiac catheterization in Wilmington, NC, and was integral in launching the cardiology program there. Dr. Helak came to The Cardiology Center of Watauga Medical Center in 2012 from Henry Ford Health System in West Bloomfield, Michigan, where he was senior attending.
Outside of work, Dr. Helak spends time reading, playing piano, playing golf. He has been married to his wife Kathleen for 42 years and has two sons and four grandchildren. Chris is a general surgeon, and Brian is an attorney.
