The Inpatient Physician Group at Cannon Memorial Hospital and Watauga Medical Center lead the medical teams that provides patient’s treatment in the hospital.

Patient’s care teams include, but are not limited to: admissions specialists, case managers, social workers, nurses, therapists, pharmacists, dietitians, x-ray technicians, financial navigators, insurance specialists and physicians, many of whom work behind the scenes to support those who work at your bedside.

Dr. Gary Chierico earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Miami and St. Georges University School of Medicine, respectively. Additionally, he completed his residency training at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine before working in the areas of pulmonology, critical care, internal medicine and as a hospitalist.
He chose to come to Watauga Medical Center because of the high quality of medicine with amazing doctors to work with in a mountain town. Outside of work, Dr. Chierico enjoys boating, sailing, piloting, golf, playing the guitar and spending time with his girlfriend Jackie. He has two children Priscilla, 20, and Preston, 16.

Born and raised in Fayetteville, NC, John Cuningham, MD completed his undergraduate degree with a major in biology as well as his medical degree at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He realized the reward in caring for patients in a clinical setting through volunteering opportunities there. This along with his interest in human physiology drove him toward a career in medicine.

Dr. Cuningham completed his residency in Boone, NC, with the MAHEC Boone Family Medicine Residency Program. He is grateful for the opportunity to care for patients in his home state and has been drawn to the mountains of Western North Carolina for some time. In his free time, Dr. Cuningham enjoys any chance to adventure and rock climb with his wife, Rose.

Natalie Halapin, MD completed her undergraduate and medical training at Tulane University and Louisiana State University respectively. In addition to specialties in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine, she also has special clinical interests in hospice / end of life care, wilderness medicine and preventive medicine.
She was drawn to Appalachian Regional Healthcare System because a smaller community hospital could help her utilize her full training. Coming from New Orleans, she has always dreamed of living in a small mountain town like Boone.
Dr. Halapin is married and has two dogs and she enjoys trail and ultrarunning and coaching individuals training for ultramarathons.
