After growing up in Lancaster, PA, Dr. Cate Trate received her bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine Internship at Temple University Hospital (TUH), and her residency, including Chief Residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Moss Rehab Hospital/Temple University Hospital.

Dr. Cate Trate decided to specialize in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation after spending one day in the Rehab Department during medical school; she was attracted to this field because Physical Medicine and Rehab focuses on improving the patient’s functional status and quality of life through close rapport with patients and their families. Dr. Cate Trate evaluates each patient and delivers very individualized, but integrated care to help the patient reach his/her functional goals and integrate back into the community. For the past 22 years in Boone, she has treated patients with functional deficits after life-changing illnesses such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and traumatic injury. She employs Botox injections with EMG guidance for spasticity and dystonia, joint injections as well as trigger point injections for soft tissue pain. While Dr. Trate’s main treatment focus is nonsurgical, she is fortunate to partner with exceptional orthopedic surgeons at AppOrtho.

In addition to serving patients at AppOrtho, Dr. Cate Trate supervises Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation at the Paul H. Broyhill Wellness Center and serves as physician supervisor in the Exercise Science Department at Appalachian State University. Her hobbies outside of medicine includes healthy cooking, drawing, painting, photography and interior design.
