Common Sports Injuries

Overuse: Injuries caused by overuse are not easily detectable and may be confused with general aches and pains. Some common overuse injuries include Achilles tendinitis, runner’s knee, shin splints, and pitching elbow.

Sprains and Strains: Sprains occur when ligaments are torn or overstretched. These commonly occur in wrists, ankles, or knees. Strains or “pulled muscles” occur when the fibers within a muscle or tendon are stretched too far or tear.

Stress Fractures: Stress fractures are tiny cracks in a bone caused by repetitive force. They are often caused by overuse.

Dislocations: Dislocations often occur in sports when force or extreme pressure is placed on bones pushing a joint out of alignment.

Broken Bones: Bone injuries can range from small cracks to compete breaks and, in some cases, require surgery to repair.

Concussions: Concussions are more common is high-impact sports such as soccer and football. Some common signs of concussion are confusion, loss of consciousness, memory loss, nausea, and blurry vision, among others. An athletic trainer can evaluate the injury, determine the severity, and determine the best option for the student.

When my daughter injured her knee before a big dance performance, Dr. Parker made himself available. We were able to get the care we needed quickly. He read the MRI and called me almost immediately to discuss next steps. After spending two months under his care and following his guidance for physical therapy, we are happy to say that she is back to dancing at 100%! I highly recommend Dr. Parker.
