AppFamily Medicine Providers

AppFamily Medicine providers are a team of board-certified family medicine physicians joined by resident physicians as a part of the MAHEC Rural Family Residency Program in Boone. Our residents are doctors who are fully licensed to practice medicine in North Carolina. AppFamily physicians work together with our residents to provide family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, care for older adults, same-day cute care, and more, while training talented young doctors.

Molly Benedum, MD

Dr. Molly Benedum is a board-certified family physician. She provides comprehensive primary care for all ages, including newborn/pediatric care and inpatient hospital care. Special clinical interests include women’s health, adolescent medicine, and integrative medicine. She loves caring for underserved and vulnerable populations. She divides her time between seeing patients and directing the new MAHEC Rural Family Medicine Residency Program and is passionate about teaching the next generation of excellent primary care physicians to serve the High Country.

Amanda Blaylock joined the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System team in November 2016. She received her bachelor’s degree in Health Education and Behavior from the University of Florida in 2011. She went on to complete her Masters in Physician Assistant Studies at Bethel University in McKenzie, TN in 2015. Before moving to Boone, the Georgia native worked for an urgent care in Austin, TX. When not at work, she enjoys spending time with her husband, watching football and going to the gym.

David Brendle, DO, joined Appalachian Regional Healthcare System in April 2017. Dr. Brendle completed his undergraduate degree in Business Administration at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and his master’s degree in Exercise Science at Appalachian State University. Before attending medical school, he worked at the Geriatric Research and Education Clinical Center (GRECC) in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pennsylvania and completed his family medicine residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.

Alycia M. Brown, MD

Alycia M. Brown, MD

Specialty: Psychiatry

Dr. Alycia Brown earned her medical degree from UNC Chapel Hill in 2000, and completed her psychiatric residency and child fellowship there as well.  She worked in private practice in Graham, NC, and at a hospital and clinic in Fort Wayne, Indiana, but is happy to finally call the High Country her home.

Dr. Brown has a passion for treating anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and ADHD. She is double board certified in child and adult psychiatry, and she particularly enjoys working with adolescents and college students. In her personal time, she loves traveling, reading, and hiking with her border collie Riley.

Dr. Wilson grew up in Bakersville, NC. He attended Wake Forest University as an undergraduate, obtained a Masters in Public Health degree at East Carolina University, and attended medical school at ECU’s Brody School of Medicine. Dr. Wilson completed his residency and served as core faculty at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia within the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine.

Laura Zimmerman, Ph.D., M.D., provides same-day and walk-in care at AppFamily Medicine. Dr. Zimmerman completed her medical training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her residency at Duke University Medical Center and Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Outside of medicine, she also has her M.ED. from the University of Houston and her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.

Before joining Appalachian Regional Healthcare System, she practiced medicine at Rex Express Care in Holly Springs, NC. When not at work, she enjoys reading, exercise and going to the theatre.

 Jeb Fox, MD

Dr. Fox is originally from Boone. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from N.C. State University and then went on to Chapel Hill to earn his MD from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Fox is passionate about providing healthcare to rural underserved populations, particularly within the Appalachian mountains. Additional subcategories that he cares deeply about include mental health, reducing stigma, substance use disorders, wilderness medicine, prenatal care, and migrant worker populations. 

In his leisure time, he loved to do all things all things music and/or snow sports. He plays guitar and piano, sings, and occasionally tries his hand at writing and recording. He has been skiing since he was two and he’s been a volunteer ski patroller at Appalachian Ski Mountain since age 15.
